  • Our Story Our Voice - Film Raro

Developing nations such as the South Pacific's Cook Islands need to learn more about telling their own digital stories to aid social and economic development. To be able to see themselves on screen, hear their own language, preserve heritage, culture and identity, to have a voice in today's overwhelming audio visual digital world. In the Pacific the standard educational model used to build the capacity of digital story telling has generally been classroom orientated and disconnected from cutting edge technology and the commercial industry as a whole. A new and innovative way of thinking needed to come about, hence Film Raro was conceived by Cook Island/ Tongan Stan Wolfgramm, the founder of New Zealand award winning media company Drum Productions. On 4 August 1965 the Cook Islands achieved self-government from New Zealand. As nzhistory.net notes, New Zealand’s formal ties with the Cook Islands began as a result of a petition it had induced some local chiefs to present. In 1901 the Federal Parliament of the Cooks was abolished. The islands were now governed by a Resident Commissioner sent to Rarotonga by the New Zealand government. This ended after the Legislative Assembly declared its intention to achieve internal self-government in 1962, leading to the New Zealand’s Cook Islands Constitution Act 1964. The films shown here, Cook Islands Looks Ahead, was produced by the National Film Unit and shows a survey of Cook Islands preparations in 1965 for internal self-government. More information about the video content bellow: 1. The Cook Islands is a self-governing island country in the South Pacific Ocean in free association with New Zealand. The Cook Islands' defence and foreign affairs are the responsibility of New Zealand, but they are exercised in consultation with the Cook Islands. Although Cook Islanders are citizens of New Zealand, they have the status of Cook Islands nationals, which is not given to other New Zealand citizens. 2. The Cook Islands are the world’s second largest producer of black pearls. 3. The chief town, Avarua is located on the north coast of Rarotonga, and it is the capital of the Cook Islands. 4. The Cook Islands were named by the Russians in the early 1800’s in honor of the Captain James Cook. On his third world voyage, Cook landed on several islands in the Southern Cook Island Group. In the early 1800s the name "Cook Islands" showed up on a Russian naval chart and it stuck. 5. Think 'Cook Islands' and you think 'beaches,' but one of the best kept secrets in the Cook Islands is the beautiful island of Aitutaki. The turquoise lagoon, white sands and thick palm forests make for an incredible backdrop for your trip. 6. The Cook Islands became a British protectorate in 1888, due largely to community fears that France might occupy the territory as it had Tahiti. On 6 September 1900, the leading islanders presented a petition asking that the islands (including Niue "if possible") should be annexed as British territory. 7. The Cook Islands were first settled in the 6th century by Polynesian people who migrated from Tahiti, an island 1,154 kilometres to the northeast. The journeys undertaken by these stone age people in their fragile craft dwarf the voyages of exploration boasted of by the Portuguese, Spanish, British, Dutch, and French. Over-population on many of the tiny islands of Polynesia led to these oceanic migrations. You could easily drive around this sparkling island in half an hour if you hurry, but that’s the charm of the Cook Islands….. no one does. It has been almost 250 years since Captain Cook became the first European to discover these islands and yet there is a gentle timelessness that endures here. Come and discover the generous rhythm and warm hospitality of the Cook Islands for yourself.

As an accomplished media producer of pacific decent and having worked around the world and through out the pacific over the last 25 years in film and television, Stan brings an indigenous perspective that understands well the needs and resources of pacific people. He also brings as an international producers perspective that can see where pacific people can grow collaboratively with the international film and television industry. Film Raro hence is a break away from a traditional form of learning in that its capacity-building format has practical, social and economic drivers attached. Film Raro is a film challenge like no other in the world. Its core objectives are to aid the social and economic development of the Cook Islands through a global strategy of engagement with filmmakers and audiences around the world. Film Raro produced by Drum Productions is a world first concept in the way that it will link dedicated filmmakers from all over the globe to indigenous peoples as collaborators in the production of eight short films made on location in The Cook Islands - Rarotonga. The finished films will be show cased to the people of the Cook Island's during a gala public screening and then at film festivals around the world. The production of a behind the scenes Film Raro documentary series will also be produced for broadcast internationally bringing substantial global exposure to the Cook Islands. Film Raro creates the opportunity to demonstrate to the worlds film and television industry that the Cook Islands is more than just a beautiful location but that it has the capacity to develop an industry of workers, professionals and service providers able to produce international film and television product. To assist this development Drum Productions sees unique opportunities in partnering with New Zealand's world leading film and television industry to support Film Raro to build an annual event and a sustainable film industry. Film Raro is a big idea, this is its first year. Everyone loves it and can see the many returns, some claim it was an idea they already had, others are willing to sit back and wait for the benefits but now's the time to get honest and help out because success is earned and many hands make a community... says Stan Wolfgramm Film Raro Exec Producer. The first Film Raro event is scheduled for March 2013. For more information check out our website. www.filmraro.com

Developments in industry, education and health services are shown too. There is also footage of the opening of the first Assembly under a new Constitution and the following celebrations. The National Film Unit was established to publicise New Zealand's participation and achievements during the Second World War. After 1945 the Film Unit expanded from producing weekly newsreels to making documentaries and films to the order of Government Departments. During its existence the Film Unit produced films for national organisations as well as many films on its own initiative. The private film industry in New Zealand relied heavily on the National Film Unit's extensive film processing facilities. Swimsuit Models Teach Airplane Safety on the Beach - Travel Destination Cook Islands The Cook Island tourism board has come out in support of Air New Zealand's controversial in-flight safety video featuring Sports Illustrated bikini models. The full version of the Safety in Paradise video was released by Air New Zealand today, after criticism over its "highly sexualised" content when behind-the-scenes footage was put out last week. Massey University lecturer and feminist commentator Deborah Russell said she objected to the use of "highly sexualised" images in a safety video. "My concern is that as a woman I get on a plane to go to a business meeting say - something serious - and I am confronted by women in bikinis in what are highly sexualised images," Russell said. "That jars. I want to be taken seriously but it seems that suddenly they are saying that my sexuality is all that matters about me." But Cook Islands Tourism Corporation general manager Graeme West said the video gave valuable exposure for the Cooks. "It's not just about the international models, although they definitely add glamour," West said. "The spectacular scenic shots of Aitutaki are also show stoppers. "Having Aitutaki - which is often described as 'heaven on earth' shown in all her beauty on Air New Zealand flights is fantastic." The video showed local men, women and children in a typically good-natured, good-humoured and tasteful Cook Islands manner, he said. Sport Illustrated models Chrissy Teigen, Ariel Meredith, Hannah Davis and Jessica Gomes all star in the video, and one of the original supermodels and three time Sports Illustrated cover girl Christie Brinkley, makes a cameo appearance. West said he hoped the video would remind people that Aitutaki, Rarotonga and the Cook Islands are a special and accessible South Pacific holiday destination for New Zealanders. Air NZ head of global brand development Jodi Williams said the behind-the-scenes video generated a lot of conversation around the world about the company's brand, and about the Cook Islands as a destination. "It's exciting for us to release the full video today and we hope it will encourage many viewers to consider a trip to the Cook Islands," she said. The video is the latest in a string of safety dramatisations to feature on the national carrier's aircraft and will be rolled out gradually on all routes from today, the 50th anniversary of the Florida-based magazine Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition. Sports Illustrated swimsuit editor MJ Day said the video was an "exciting component" of the magazine's anniversary celebrations. "Our partnership with Air New Zealand is brilliant in every way," Day said. "We were able to create a raucous safety video in the true spirit of SI Swimsuit and our Kiwi friends." Set in Cook Islands, the "Safety in Paradise" video stars four Sports Illustrated models sunning themselves in a beautiful beach location. One of the world's first supermodels, Christie Brinkley, who makes a pool-side appearance from Los Angeles where she is shown admiring her shirtless pool boy, describes it as "the world's most beautiful safety video". Cook Islands locals in traditional dress are shown paddling a canoe in tranquil waters past a bikini-clad model, and the video ends with the swimsuit models joining in a cultural dance. The airline released a behind-the-scenes preview last week and was met with criticism from feminist commentator Deborah Russell, who said she objected to the "highly sexualised" video. But Cook Islands Tourism Corporation's general manager Graeme West said he supported the video as it would give the tropical island international exposure. He said the video had been filmed in a tasteful, good-humoured manner. "It's not just about the international models, although they definitely add glamour. "forbes rich list" "London luxury shopping" billionaire millionaire Monaco "super rich" "private jet" yacht entertainment "luxs report" us usa America uk London "Donald trump" Dubai elite executive arab ceo forbes Europe vip money lil wayne travel "5 star hotel "super car" bugatti Lamborghini Ferrari Porsche private jet 2014 2015 monaco luxury "get rich" gambling investment Beverly Hills Malibu Miami "positive thinking" "super yacht" "mega yacht" "playboy mansion" "luxury lifestyle" mansion Sports illustrated swimsuit models cook island travel tourism video "The spectacular scenic shots of Aitutaki are also show-stoppers." As well as providing safety messages in an entertaining way, Air New Zealand hopes the video will encourage travel to the Cook Islands. In 2013 alone, the airline carried almost 200,000 people to the island from Auckland, Sydney and Los Angeles. The video coincides with Sports Illustrated's 50th anniversary, and will be rolled out across the airline's fleet from the end of February.
